COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course provides a full appreciation in the techniques and methods of penetrant testing. A high theory and practical content is offered by the course. The course will suit a wide variety of NDT personnel including QC inspectors and technicians and relates to the inspection of forging, casting and welded structures.

This course is opened to all participants, in participant NDT personnel, supervisors, NDT trainers, contractors, researchers and those who are interested in Liquid Penetrant Testing technique.

MODULE 1: GENERAL KNOWLEDGE

• Basic principles of non-destructive testing (NDT).
• Materials and defects
• Processing and defects
• Materials in service
• Quality and standardization

 MODULE 2: PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES OF THE PENETRANT TESTING (PT)

• General description of the method.
• Properties of liquid penetrants.
• Behavior of liquid penetrants.
• Solutions and dispersions.
• Mechanism of development.
• Luminous and ultraviolet spectrum.
• Basic formulation of penetrating liquids with oily and non oily base
• Removers used in the process

MODULE 3: PROCESSING (PT)

• Reparation of the work-pieces, treatment, identification and protection of the areas not to be examined.
• Cleaning prior to inspection.
• Conditions and requirements for the different drying stages.
• Inspection process.
• Observation of indications.
• Recording of findings

MODULE 4: TEST EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS (PT)

• Evaluation of the materials used in the test.
• Cleaning equipment.
• Compressed air equipment
• Stationary installations for processing by immersion.
• Light sources and light meters.
• Standardized work pieces for evaluating processes and qualifying procedures.

MODULE 5: PROCEDURES AND WRITTEN INSTRUCTION (PT)

• Written instruction applicable to liquid penetrant testing.
• Test specifications and written instruction.
• Standards for liquid penetrant testing and testing personnel.

MODULE 6: SAFETY

• Industrial safety in the use of chemical and inflammable products.
• Personnel hazards and safety.
• Applicable safety standards.
• Safety conditions required for the use of UV light.
• Safety instructions for the personnel.
• Safety factors applicable to the test.
